The deadly incident took place Sunday afternoon in District No. 15 of Durrës, in the former Këneta area, when a Mercedes-Benz ML allegedly driven by Radaçi struck three children who were playing on the sidewalk near their homes. Two children died from the impact, while a third child remains in critical condition at the Trauma Hospital, where doctors continue life-saving treatment.
Sources close to the investigation say the suspect had long been considered a danger by residents in the neighborhood. Witnesses claim he was frequently seen driving at high speed and allegedly under the influence of alcohol through residential streets. One local resident reportedly told investigators that just one day before the tragedy, he narrowly avoided being hit along with his 7-year-old grandson.
Authorities have also confirmed that the 57-year-old had previous traffic violations and had allegedly been penalized multiple times by police. In at least two previous cases, his driving license had reportedly been suspended over drunk driving offenses, further intensifying public outrage over the incident.
The case has sparked nationwide debate in Albania over road safety enforcement, repeat offenders, and whether stronger preventive measures could have avoided one of the country’s most heartbreaking tragedies this year.
