Greek authorities have launched an investigation after an explosive-laden unmanned naval drone was discovered near the island of Lefkada, with regional media reports suggesting the device may have passed through routes connected to Albania’s port city of Vlora.
The drone, reportedly of possible Ukrainian origin according to early assessments in Greek media, was found off the western Greek coast and safely neutralized by bomb disposal teams. Initial reports indicate the unmanned vessel contained explosive material, triggering security concerns within Greece and across the wider Mediterranean region.
Albanian broadcaster Top Channel reported that part of the debate in Greece has focused on the drone’s possible route, with speculation that it could have departed or transited through the Port of Vlora before reaching Greek waters. However, as of now, no official evidence from Greek or Albanian authorities has publicly confirmed that claim.
The incident has sparked political debate in Greece, with opposition figures calling for greater transparency over the drone’s origin, mission, and how it managed to reach Greek territorial waters undetected. Military experts are reportedly examining the drone’s serial numbers and GPS data as part of the ongoing investigation.
Given the strategic importance of the Ionian Sea and regional maritime routes, the case is expected to remain under close scrutiny from both security agencies and political institutions in the Balkans.
