A Journey from Solothurn to the Bundesliga
Riola left home at the age of 15 to chase her football dreams in Germany. It was a bold move for a teenager, one filled with challenges.
“In Germany, everything is much bigger. There’s more competition, more quality—technically, physically, tactically,” she recalls.
The transition from Switzerland to Germany wasn’t just professional—it was deeply personal. Alone in a foreign country, without knowing the language or anyone around her, Riola had to grow up fast.
“I left my family when I was 15. I’ve spent little time with them since, and I’ve often been alone. But I’ve adapted. I think it’s so important to integrate and try to feel good where you are. I don’t complain. I’m grateful for my health and my family’s health—that gives me motivation every day.”
Strength through Family
Despite the distance, Riola remains deeply connected to her roots and especially to her family, who have stood by her every step of the way.
“They’re always there—in the good times and the tough ones. I talk to my mom and dad every day. They’re my best friends.”
Euro 2025: A Dream Becoming Reality
Playing in a European Championship is every athlete’s dream. For Riola, doing it in Switzerland makes it even more special.
“It’s very, very special to me. The Euros and the World Cup are the biggest events a footballer can play in.”
This year’s tournament is more than a milestone—it’s a defining moment. With the support of the home crowd, Riola and the Swiss team are aiming high:
“Our goal is to get through the group stage and go as far as we can, like the men’s team. We’re lucky to play at home in Switzerland, so we want to make the most of it.”
Representing a country that is both her physical and emotional home brings a deep sense of pride:
“It’s a very special feeling. My entire family will be there. It’s something completely different to play in your own country. It’s rare in a player’s career, and for me, it could be one of the biggest moments of my life.”
Breaking Barriers Early
Long before her international rise, Riola made headlines by joining FC Basel—not the women’s team, but the men’s youth team. In an environment where stereotypes ran deep, she earned her place through pure talent and leadership, even being named captain after just three matches.
Her standout performances culminated in 2022 with international recognition, including the “Talent Trophy” awarded by Mundo Deportivo, confirming her status as one of Europe’s most exciting rising stars.
A Message for the Next Generation
For young girls who dream of following in her footsteps, Riola has a clear message:
“Never give up. Today it’s possible for girls to become professionals, to live from football, and to be successful.”
From the streets of Solothurn to the stadiums of Europe, Riola Xhemaili is not just chasing her dream—she’s inspiring a generation. And as Euro 2025 approaches, one thing is clear: she’s ready to make history.
