Born in Switzerland to Kosovar parents, Eriona Elezi is a shining example of a young woman who has overcome prejudice and challenges to pursue her passion for football. From her early days at FC Langnau am Albis to proudly representing Kosovo’s senior national team, her journey is an inspiration to every girl dreaming of reaching the top in the world’s most beloved sport.
A Love Born on the Pitch
Eriona discovered her love for football at the tender age of six. Her father, a coach at FC Langnau am Albis, brought her along to a training session one day—and it was love at first sight. “What attracted me was that football is a team sport where everyone must contribute toward a common goal,” she says.
Rising Through the Ranks
She began playing with the boys at FC Langnau am Albis, where her talent stood out. At 12, she was selected for the regional team of the Zurich canton (FVRZ), which brought together the best players in the region. Her performance earned her a trial with FC Zürich, where she secured a spot in the elite youth program, rising through every age group from U14 to U21.
Alongside her club career, she represented Switzerland in youth national teams from U16 to U19. But her heart always beat for Kosovo. A year ago, she fulfilled a lifelong dream by wearing the Kosovo jersey for the first time during European Championship qualifiers. That campaign made history, as Kosovo's women's team earned promotion from League B to League A—a historic milestone for the young nation.
Half a year later, Eriona received her first call-up to Kosovo’s senior national team, debuting in a friendly match. After eight years with FC Zürich, she sought a new challenge and joined FC Aarau—a move that is already bearing fruit. “I’m happy and excited to continue developing with this club and with the Kosovo national team,” she adds.
The Backbone of Her Success
Family has been Eriona’s greatest support system—especially her father. “They’ve believed in me even when I doubted myself. Despite the obstacles, they never gave up on me,” she shares with deep gratitude.
Breaking Stereotypes in a Male-Dominated Sport
Being the only girl on a boys’ team wasn’t easy. Eriona had to work twice as hard to earn respect and be taken seriously. “Skepticism and prejudice were always present, but they motivated me even more,” she says. Her dedication and discipline eventually broke down those barriers. For her, football was never a “boys’ sport”—it was her deepest passion.
Fighting for Equality in the Game
Despite progress, Eriona acknowledges that prejudices against girls in football still exist. “Many still don’t take women’s football seriously and doubt our abilities. That needs to change.” She advocates for equal respect, more media visibility, and greater investment in the women’s game—from youth development to professional pay.
The Balancing Act
One of her biggest personal challenges has been balancing school, training, matches, and work. “It takes discipline, ambition, and sacrifice,” she notes—qualities she has consistently embodied throughout her journey.
Supporting Migrant Girls in Sport
For girls from migrant backgrounds, inclusion and encouragement are essential. Eriona stresses the importance of safe and supportive environments in schools and clubs where every girl feels seen and valued. “They need to be brave, believe in themselves, and know they belong.”
A Message to Aspiring Girls
“To every girl who dreams of playing football—enjoy the game, believe in yourself, trust your abilities, and listen to your body,” Eriona says. “Football is for everyone. Don’t let anyone stop you.”
