Controversy Erupts After UÇK Symbols Removed During Albania–Serbia Match in Tirana

The removal of Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK) symbols from the “Air Albania” stadium during the Albania–Serbia football match held Saturday evening has sparked strong reactions across both sides of the Albanian-Kosovar border. The match, which ended in a goalless draw, was part of the qualification round for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and was played under heightened security measures.

Controversy Erupts After UÇK Symbols Removed During Albania–Serbia Match in Tirana

The act of removing UÇK flags and apparel from fans within the stadium has been heavily criticized, particularly by groups and individuals who view the UÇK as a core symbol of national resistance and sacrifice.

One of the strongest responses came from the War Veterans Organization of the Kosovo Liberation Army, which issued an emotional statement condemning the move. The organization called it a blow to the historical memory and the blood of the fallen, stressing that the UÇK flag represents the graves of those who never returned. Their message: “When the UÇK flag is touched, the blood of our martyrs is touched. We ask for nothing more than respect.”

Videos circulating on social media show security forces at the stadium removing fans due to clothing or flags bearing UÇK insignia. In one widely shared video, a fan is escorted out of the stadium for wearing a shirt with the UÇK emblem. The footage has fueled accusations of censorship and disrespect toward a symbol many consider sacred.

Political figures have also weighed in with fierce criticism. One called the incident a disgrace and an insult to those who gave their lives for national freedom, warning that such actions weaken the sense of unity and deepen divisions within the Albanian-speaking world. Another voice stated: “In a country where the state and police do not respect symbols of national resistance, the tendency for division is strengthened, and national unity is undermined.”

The controversy has highlighted deep sensitivities surrounding historical symbols and national identity, particularly in the context of a high-profile match between two nations with a tense recent history. While the game itself remained goalless, the political and emotional aftershocks off the field continue to reverberate.
