Kasaj, who had entered the UK illegally and was on conditional release at the time, fatally hit pedestrian Leo Moran and cyclist Joel Carriedo in a horrifying sequence caught on surveillance footage. The court was shown videos of Kasaj fleeing the scene at high speed in a Mercedes-Benz, only to crash into a residential wall moments later.

In March 2024, Kasaj pleaded guilty to one charge of attempted murder and two counts of manslaughter. His actions have sparked intense public outcry across the UK, with questions raised over how he remained free despite his immigration status and mental health issues.

According to British media reports, Kasaj has been diagnosed with paranoid psychosis linked to schizophrenia. Forensic psychiatric experts believe his mental condition may have worsened due to substance abuse, particularly cannabis and cocaine, which he is suspected of consuming before the crash.

In testimony given to a defense psychiatrist, Kasaj revealed that after dropping out of school in Albania, he worked at a car wash before moving to Athens in search of employment. He reportedly arrived in the UK around two years before the fatal incident and had been living in Coventry.

In August 2022, he was arrested for illegal entry into the UK but was released on bail on October 7, under the condition that he report to the Immigration Reporting Centre in Solihull—a requirement he never fulfilled.

The case has ignited debate in Britain about immigration enforcement and mental health care for migrants with criminal histories or psychiatric conditions. Many are calling for stricter controls and better monitoring of individuals released under such circumstances.

Authorities are expected to deliver a final sentencing decision soon, with many watching closely due to the tragic loss of life and the complex factors surrounding the case.
