Grenell accuses Albin Kurti of being "anti-American"

Former White House envoy for Kosovo-Serbia dialogue Richard Grenell said on Tuesday that the leader of the Self-Determination Movement (LVV) Albin Kurti is anti-American.

In a post on Twitter, Grenell said that Kurti was against US policies suggested by former US presidents such as Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, as the Radio Free Europe in Albanian reports.

According to him, the team of US President Joe Biden should stop this.

Grenell made the comments as he distributed an article in the Israeli daily Haaretz, in which, citing a Self Determination Movement statement regarding Kurti's meeting with Turkish Ambassador to Pristina Çağri Sakar, it was said that under pressure from Turkey, Kosovo may reverse the decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem.

The opening of the embassy in Jerusalem is foreseen by the agreement of September 4, when Kosovo and Serbia signed in the White House two documents for the normalization of economic relations, in the presence of the then American president, Donald Trump.

The document signed by Kosovo envisages mutual recognition with Israel, while, in the case of Serbia, it envisages the relocation of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which has not yet happened.

On February 1, Kosovo and Israel in a virtual ceremony have formalized the establishment of diplomatic relations.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel, Gabriel Ashkenazi stated that day that he approved the request of the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo, Meliza Haradinaj-Stublla for Kosovo to open an embassy in Jerusalem,

What was said about the embassy in Kurti's meeting with the Turkish ambassador?

The issue of the Kosovo embassy in Israel was the topic of discussion on March 1 between the leader of Vetëvendosje, Albin Kurti, and the Turkish ambassador to Pristina, Çağri Sakar.

Kurti has warned that he will consider the question of which city the embassy will be located in, Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, adding that they will see "even the outgoing government documentation".

However, Kurti said that establishing diplomatic relations between Kosovo and Israel is important and "a good opportunity for development".

The Turkish embassy in Pristina had previously opposed the opening of the Kosovo embassy in Jerusalem.

"Biden has asked Kurti to support the demarcation"

In another Twitter post, Grenell said that Kurti threw tear gas at the Kosovo Assembly, trying to stop the demarcation of Kosovo with Montenegro, a step that was supported by former US President Barack Obama.

"Joe Biden also called on Kurt at the time to support the demarcation - but he had turned to terrorism," Grenell said.

In April last year, Kurti said that Grenell was directly involved in the political crisis in Kosovo.

He referred to the overthrow of his government on March 25, through a no-confidence motion launched by the Democratic League of Kosovo, saying his government collapsed only because Grenell was in a hurry to sign an agreement with Serbia.

In a meeting between Kurti and the US Ambassador to Pristina Philip Kosnett, after the early parliamentary elections of February 14 in Kosovo, the leader of Vetëvendosje was quoted as saying to Kosnetti that in the future Kosovo will have the opportunity to cooperate with the United States in projects that "help the democratic state-building, the economic development of our country and the deepening of bilateral relations between our two countries".

In this election process, Lëvizja Vetëvendosje won about 48 percent of the vote.
