Venice Commission in Tirana on February 9th to give an opinion on laws over free freedom
At the request of the Assembly of Albania, a delegation of the Venice Commission will pay a three-day visit to Albania from  9 to 12 February 2020.

The visit is part of giving an opinion on two bills, one for the Visual Audio Media Authority (AMA) and the other for the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP), or otherwise the "anti - Defamation" laws package.

It is expected for the delegation to be received at a meeting by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the Socialist Party Taulant Balla and group representation, on Monday, February 10, 2020, at 10:05-10: 45, at Committee on Laws, Presidency of the Assembly.

Meanwhile, in March, the Venice Commission is scheduled to review the two anti-defamation laws.

The package proposed by the government and Prime Minister Edi Rama has sparked strong reactions and clashes in Albania, as it is opposed by the opposition, analysts, journalists and civil society who see the package as a violation of free speech and government control over the media.

President Ilir Meta returned the laws on electronic media to the Assembly, arguing that they were in violation of the Constitution, while the Assembly postponed their adoption after Venice's consideration and opinion.
