Over 10% do not pay health insurance contributions in Bulgaria

Low life expectancy, high childhood obesity, a higher number of smokers per capita and extremely high medical costs are the conclusions of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and the European Observatory for Health Systems and Health Care Policies in Bulgaria. Bulgaria is the EU Country with the lowest per capita healthcare costs, but compared to its neighbors, the ratio of healthcare costs / GDP is high.

Bulgaria spends over 1,300 euros per person, which is twice the amount it spent in 2005. Pharmaceutical companies receive 43% of the public fund for health care. 34% of the fund is allocated to hospital treatment and very little money has been spent on preventing various diseases, experts say.
