Nanoscience and nanotechnology are the vanguard technologies of the century. The renowned Albanian professor at the University of Barcelona, who also teaches in Japan and the United States, Arben Merkoci, is in charge of the newly created nanotechnology and nanoscience research unit at the Academy of Sciences, nicknamed "Nanoalb". The world-class academician Merkoci says nanoscience and nanotechnology are applied in a variety of fields, ranging from disease diagnosis, monitoring of environmental pollutants, to energy, or even to technological and industrial transfers. The Nanoalb unit promises to bring together the most brilliant minds of the Albanian territories to make a real contribution to Albania. But the state also has to invest, as the development prospects are tremendous.

“The idea is for this unit to coordinate the activities that Albanians conduct in nanoscience in Albania and in Albanian lands. Nanoscience is about science that deals with small dimensions, one billionth of a meter. The devices that are created in this dimension are used in the field of medicine, environment, industrial ”, stated academician Arben Merkoçi, coordinator of Nanoalb.

Present at the seminar was also the Rector of Luarasi University, Professor Et'hem Ruka, who said that the main objective of nanotechnology-related activities today are in areas of vital importance to man. Ruka calls for the creation of the nanoscience department. “I think the Academy of Sciences has taken a very good initiative. For those who don't know, nanotechnology deals with matter processing at the atomic level, at the nanometer level. It's like comparing a hazelnut to a globe. Nanoscience as a culture is not transmitted in Albania. We do not have a nanotechnology faculty yet. I have suggested to colleagues to open the nanotechnology department. We have every opportunity to walk this path,” said Ruka.
