The EU encourages Balkan countries to move to clean energy

Johannes Hahn

EU Enlargement and Neighborhood Commissioner Johannes Hahn and Montenegrin Prime Minister Dusko Markovic kicked off a ministerial meeting in Podgorica on Thursday to push the Western Balkan countries into clean energy.

Hahn has said that EU energy policy is based on the Paris Climate Change Agreement. He recalled that this agreement means reducing 25 percent of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions to 40 percent by 2030. Hahn said that one of the key ways to achieve this goal is shifting to the resources of clean energy. He also stressed that there are plans for new hydro power plants in the region. In the framework of the ministerial meeting, a document is expected to be signed on the basis of which the international financial institutions will be able to allocate additional finance for the transition of Western Balkan countries to clean energy.
