The privacy of patients in Albania is at risk, doctors are 'trafficking' the data

Albanian doctors do not preserve patient privacy. By trafficking patients from public clinics to private clinics, they distribute personal data related to the diagnosis as well as the telephone number.

May have happened while you are in a visit in the public system, someone called you from a private clinic with which you have not contacted previously and surprisingly they have provided not only your phone number, but also your diagnose.

In this way they offer you to go to the clinic where they can also gift you a free exam.

And this is an open breach of privacy, which is a fundamental right of the patient.

Commissioner for Personal Data Conservation, Besnik Dervishi, reports on many cases from public and private institutions.

"We have held 300 administrative investigations over the past two years, 40 of which are focused on the health sector. There has been a violation of the character: patient health records, data found in the public institution suddenly are found also in the private hospital," he says.

But Albanian citizens do not have much information about maintaining secure their personal data as the cases are few.

We have of all kinds of complaints, from not storing personal data to footage and misuse," says Besnik Dervishi.
