During his stay in New York, the President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, received in a special meeting the President and founder of the Jewish International Foundation "Raoul Wallenberg", Baruch Tenembaum, along with other members of this Foundation.
President Meta praised Tenembaum and International Raoul Wallenberg's initiative to declare Albania as the "House of Life" in respect of the contribution Albanian and Albanian people have provided for the protection and housing of a large number of Jews during the Holocaust.President Meta supported the idea of organizing a special ceremony in Tirana and setting up a poster in honor of the contribution of the Albanian people.
Focusing on historical and traditional relations between Albanians and Jews, President Meta underlined that "this friendship, as well as the Albanian code of Besa, made the number of Jews in Albania to get multiplied during the Holocaust , and for this reason, we Albanians are proud."
"No Jew has been submittedthe to Nazis, and such tragedies of the past with Jews, or even the ethnic ones happened in the Balkan region, should not be repeated. Never again!" Meta underlined.
For his part, Tenembaum thanked President Meta for supporting the implementation of this project, and underlined the deep gratitude of the Jews for the role played by Albanians during the Holocaust.
