Aristidh Kola: The Albanian-Arvanite Intellectual Who Dedicated His Life to Preserving His People's Language and Identity

Aristidh Kola was one of the best-known voices defending the language, culture and Arvanite identity in Greece. A historian, publicist and lawyer, he dedicated his life to preserving the roots of his community and its historical ties with the Albanian people.

Born in 1944, Kola headed the League of Arvanites in Greece and became widely known for his influential work The Arvanites and the Origin of the Greeks. Through his books and the magazines Besa and Arvanon, he brought attention to Arvanite history, language and traditions.

Kola also established close cooperation with the Arbëreshë community in Italy and Albanian intellectuals from Albania, Kosovo, Turkey and the wider diaspora.

He publicly supported the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), raising his voice in Greece in support of the Albanian population of Kosovo and its struggle.

His passion for language and cultural preservation also led him to begin compiling a dictionary of the Arvanite language, a project he unfortunately never managed to complete.

Aristidh Kola passed away in 2000 following a serious illness. He left behind a valuable intellectual legacy and the example of a man who devoted his entire life to preserving his community's language, heritage and roots.
