TIRANA, Albania — October 21, 2026 — Luan Rama has issued a strongly worded open letter to members of Albania’s ruling Socialist Party, urging them to take political and moral responsibility amid escalating protests and clashes between demonstrators and police.

A former member of the Socialist Party’s leadership and a former minister in several Socialist governments, Luan Rama argues that the party must not become a vehicle for protecting the personal interests of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
“Albania is more important than Edi Rama,” he declares, calling on party members to reflect on their responsibilities as the country faces growing political and social tensions.
“The Socialist Party is not Edi Rama’s personal property”
In his letter, Luan Rama criticizes the silence of the Socialist Party’s leadership during the demonstrations, questioning why its governing bodies have not publicly addressed the crisis.
He warns that the party was not founded to serve one individual and should not become an organization that remains silent, obeys and justifies every decision simply to protect its leader.
Addressing Socialist Party members directly, he asks whether their political responsibilities end where Edi Rama’s wishes begin.
A call for political accountability
The letter comes amid ongoing anti-government demonstrations in Albania, accompanied by violent confrontations between protesters and police.
Luan Rama urges party officials to listen to citizens’ concerns and accept responsibility for the country’s political direction rather than hiding behind their chairman.
His intervention brings an internal challenge to the Socialist Party’s leadership into the wider debate over the protests and the government’s response.
The central message of his appeal is clear: the interests of Albania must come before the interests of any political leader.
