Driton Berisha, a 37-year-old man from Kosovo seeking asylum in Germany, has been praised as a hero after intervening in an attempted theft in the German city of Villingen and helping police detain a knife-wielding suspect.
Berisha was walking with a female friend when he noticed shop employees struggling to stop a thief. Without hesitating, he decided to step in and help.
The suspect was carrying a knife and reportedly attempted to stab Berisha several times. The Kosovar asked him to drop the weapon, but when he refused, Berisha punched him and knocked him to the ground.
Although Berisha suffered a minor injury to his thigh during the confrontation, he managed to restrain the suspect until police arrived and took him into custody.
One police officer reportedly described him as the “Hero of Villingen” in recognition of his intervention.
However, it was Berisha's response that made the story particularly moving. He explained that Germany had helped Kosovo and had also given him support as a refugee. For that reason, he considered it natural to help others whenever he had the opportunity.
His actions have drawn attention to a personal story of gratitude and solidarity, as a man who found refuge in Germany stepped forward to help people in the community where he now lives.
