Haris Vongli Accuses Edi Rama of Turning Albania’s Socialist Party into a ‘Gangster Party’

Haris Vogli has sharply criticized Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama after footage circulated online appeared to show masked men carrying wooden sticks emerging from the headquarters of Albania’s ruling Socialist Party (PS) during the ongoing protests in Tirana.

Still footage shows masked individuals carrying wooden sticks outside the ruling Socialist Party headquarters in Tirana, an incident criticized by activist Haris Vogli amid ongoing protests against Prime Minister Edi Rama.
In a public reaction accompanying the video, Vogli questioned whether the footage provided further evidence of what she described as the transformation of the Socialist Party into a “party of gangsters.”

“Do you want another piece of evidence that Rama has turned the Socialist Party into a party of gangsters? Watch this video!” she wrote.

Vogli went on to question why individuals carrying sticks would emerge from the party headquarters while protesters were gathered outside, challenging Rama’s public emphasis on the state, institutions and the rule of law.

“Why does this man, this prime minister, who talks about the state and institutions, protect his party headquarters with thugs?” she asked.

Haris Vogli’s Background and Political Criticism

Haris Vogli, also identified in Albanian media as Haris Vongli, is an educator and activist who has publicly commented on Albania’s political situation and the ongoing protest movement. She has appeared in media discussions about the demonstrations and has expressed criticism of the government’s handling of public discontent.

In recent public commentary, Vongli has addressed issues including political accountability, the country's institutional climate and the emigration of qualified Albanians. Her latest reaction places the footage from the Socialist Party headquarters within her broader criticism of Rama’s leadership.

Her statements represent her political assessment of the events and should be distinguished from independently established findings about the identities, affiliations or intentions of the individuals shown in the footage.

Footage Shows Masked Individuals Carrying Sticks

Reports published by Albanian media on October 18 described scenes in which masked individuals carrying wooden sticks emerged from the Socialist Party headquarters as students and other demonstrators gathered outside.

Panorama and Balkanweb reported that the individuals appeared to approach or attempt to attack protesters. However, their identities and official status were not established in those reports. Panorama | Balkanweb

The footage has raised questions about security around the party headquarters and the circumstances under which the individuals emerged from the building. Establishing who they were, whether they were connected to the party, and what happened before and after the recorded scenes would require further verification.

Protests Against Rama’s Government Continue

The incident comes amid escalating anti-government demonstrations in Tirana, where students and other protesters have demanded Rama’s resignation and raised concerns about corruption, economic opportunities and the future of the country.

Reuters reported on October 17 that the protests had intensified, with clashes between demonstrators and police, allegations of excessive force and growing pressure on the government. The authorities have also reported violence against police officers and damage to public and private property. Reuters

Against this backdrop, the scenes outside the Socialist Party headquarters have added another point of controversy to an already tense political situation.

Vogli’s reaction goes beyond questioning the conduct of the unidentified individuals in the video. She accuses Rama of using people associated with criminal behaviour to obtain and maintain political power.

In her statement, she alleges that the prime minister has used such individuals to gain power, subsequently given them influence, and is now relying on them again to protect his position.

These are serious political accusations made by Vogli and have not been independently established by the footage alone.

The central questions remain who the masked individuals were, whether they had any formal or informal connection to the Socialist Party, and whether authorities will investigate the incident.

As videos from the protests continue to circulate online, independently verifying the circumstances behind them will be essential to determining responsibility and establishing what actually happened.
