Albania, the Forum for Political Dialogue launches the petition of the professor: "Stop all violence against the student"

A petition launched by a group of university professors in Albania in response to reported incidents of violence during recent student protests has already gathered dozens of signatures from the academic community.

The initiative aims to bring together an increasing number of professors from Albanian universities around a joint declaration. Its primary objective is to demand the protection of students, full respect for citizens' civil rights, and political accountability for the sensitive situation the country is currently facing.

The initiative's organizers are calling on colleagues across the country to sign the open letter and actively participate in the university community's public response. According to the organizers, the growing support from academic staff sends a clear signal that the academic community is taking an increasingly active role in the debate over recent socio-political developments.

Calls for Resignation and an Appeal to Law Enforcement

The declaration explicitly calls for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign and for the formation of an interim government (qeveri kujdestare). According to the signatories, a transitional period led by a caretaker government would be essential to ensuring institutional stability, restoring calm, and guaranteeing respect for the will of the people.

The professors also address the Albanian State Police directly, calling for an immediate end to any form of violence or repression against students. At the same time, the statement urges foreign diplomatic missions in the country to remain vigilant and respond in defense of the population's fundamental rights. It also reminds protesters of the importance of conducting demonstrations peacefully while safeguarding public and private property.

This statement comes at a time of heightened tensions, as youth-led mobilizations have sparked widespread debate across Albanian society, bringing transparency, political accountability, and the protection of human rights back to the forefront of the public agenda. With the first 70 signatures already collected, the organizers aim to expand the petition's reach further and involve universities throughout the country.
