A portrait of 20-year-old Luis Miguel Varela Mendes, known as Milton, who tragically lost his life during a summer holiday in Ksamil, Albania.
The holiday that was supposed to bring joy and unforgettable memories to a 20-year-old from Nice ended in unimaginable tragedy on the Albanian coast.

Luis Miguel Varela Mendes, known affectionately in Nice by his nickname “Milton,” was killed with a knife on August 18 in Ksamil, Albania, during a confrontation that reportedly began inside a local establishment before continuing onto a nearby beach.

For a young man who had traveled thousands of kilometers in search of a few days of summer happiness, the journey ended with a life cut painfully short.

A Young Man Who Tried to Calm Conflicts

Milton had moved to Nice from Cape Verde when he was just 11 years old. Over the years, he became a familiar and appreciated figure within his local community.

For several years, he was supported by La Ruche, a social center operated by the association La Semeuse, where he participated in activities for young people.

Christophe Tassano, the association's director, remembered Milton as a young man who was “very loved” and someone who “always tried to calm conflicts.”

That description makes the circumstances of his death all the more painful.

A young man remembered for trying to prevent confrontation lost his life in one.

A Holiday That Was Never Supposed to Happen in Albania

Milton and his friends had originally planned to travel to Spain. But delays in organizing the trip led them to change their plans, and they eventually chose Albania instead.

According to reports from Nice, educators who knew Milton had advised him not to travel there.

What began as an ordinary decision among friends looking for a summer destination would ultimately become a tragedy that devastated an entire community.

The details of the confrontation in Ksamil remain a matter for the Albanian authorities to investigate. But according to Albanian police, the main suspect — a 29-year-old man — was arrested only hours after the killing.

Police said the suspect was found hiding inside the trunk of a vehicle traveling toward Tirana.

A Family Already Facing Another Tragedy

Behind Milton's death lies another devastating reality.

His family in Nice was already struggling after their home was recently destroyed by a fire.

Now, they are facing the unimaginable task of bringing their son's body home while also dealing with legal expenses connected to the case.

For a family already struck by one disaster, the loss of a 20-year-old son has created another burden that no family should have to carry.

Local associations and community organizations in Nice have mobilized to support them.

A fundraising campaign had collected more than €6,300 by Friday, as friends, organizations and members of the community came together to help the family meet the costs of repatriating Milton's body and dealing with the legal consequences of his death.

A Life Remembered in Nice

It is easy for a violent death to become reduced to a headline: a name, an age, a place and an arrest.

But Milton was more than the circumstances of his final moments.

He was a child who arrived in Nice from Cape Verde at 11. He was a young man who grew up within a community, participated in youth activities and built relationships with people who remember him with affection.

He had friends. He had plans. He had a future.

He was only 20.

His journey to Albania was supposed to be a holiday — a few days by the sea, shared with friends, perhaps memories that would last a lifetime.

Instead, the memories left behind will belong to those who loved him.

A Summer Holiday That Became a Family's Nightmare

The tragedy of Milton's death extends far beyond Ksamil.

It reaches back to Nice, to the social center where he spent years, to the friends who traveled with him, and to a family now forced to prepare for the return of their son's body instead of waiting for him to come home from vacation.

There is something particularly heartbreaking about the age of 20: old enough to dream independently, but still with so much of life ahead.

Milton's life should have continued far beyond this summer.

Instead, his name is now being remembered in Nice not because of how he died, but because of who he was — a young man loved by his community, remembered as someone who tried to calm others, and whose life ended thousands of kilometers from home.

For his family and those who knew him, Albania will never simply be the place where Milton went on holiday.

It will forever be the place where a 20-year-old's journey home became a journey of mourning.
