42 Days of Protest in Tirana: Thousands Challenge Edi Rama Government Over €4 Million Kanye West Concert Spending

The national protest in Tirana has entered its 42nd day, with thousands of citizens once again gathering in the capital to challenge the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama and demand greater transparency over decisions involving public money.

The latest demonstration opened with protesters singing the Albanian national anthem, a symbolic moment that reflected the message of unity promoted by organizers. Citizens from different parts of Albania, together with members of the Albanian diaspora, joined the protest, which has become one of the longest-running demonstrations against the current government.

The Saturday protest has continued to attract large numbers of participants who accuse the authorities of ignoring the economic difficulties faced by many Albanian families while prioritizing expensive public projects and high-profile events.

For many protesters, the issue is not only one concert but a wider debate about government priorities, accountability, and the way taxpayers’ money is being used.

Kanye West Concert Sparks Political Controversy in Albania

The 42nd day of protests coincided with the concert of American rapper Kanye West at the newly built “Eagle Stadium” in Kashar, near the Tirana-Durrës highway.

Although the event was promoted by authorities as an international cultural achievement, it has become the center of political controversy after reports that the Albanian government allocated around €4 million in public funds for its organization.

Critics argue that Albania, a country still facing serious challenges in healthcare, education, wages, and social support, should not spend millions of euros on entertainment events while many citizens struggle with everyday costs.

The controversy has also affected the public perception of Kanye West, with some angry protesters directing harsh criticism toward the American artist and accusing him of accepting money from a government facing public opposition. Some voices on social media have even used offensive language against West, calling him an “asshole” for performing at an event they believe is connected to government image-building.

“Rama Resign” Messages Echo During Protest and Concert

During both the protest and the surrounding public discussions linked to the concert, anti-government messages continued to spread, including calls such as “Rama, resign.”

Demonstrators say that the government is focusing on international publicity while failing to address concerns about corruption, rising living costs, and the lack of opportunities that continue to push many Albanians to leave the country.

The protest movement has framed itself as a demand for political responsibility and a stronger voice for citizens in decisions affecting national resources.

Police Restrictions Around Tirana-Durrës Highway Raise Further Debate

To guarantee the organization of the concert, Tirana Police introduced temporary traffic restrictions around the Tirana-Durrës highway area.

The measures affected one of Albania’s busiest transport routes and generated additional criticism from citizens who questioned whether state institutions were dedicating excessive resources to support a private entertainment event.

Opponents of the government argue that the heavy police presence and logistical support demonstrate the priority given to protecting a major event rather than responding to citizens gathered in protest.

A Growing Conflict Over Government Image and Public Priorities

The 42-day protest represents a deeper conflict between the government’s vision of promoting Albania through international events and the concerns of citizens who believe public funds should first address domestic problems.

For protesters, the Kanye West concert has become a symbol of a broader political issue: the relationship between power, public money, and accountability.

As the demonstrations continue, pressure remains on the Rama government to provide clearer explanations regarding the use of state resources and respond to the demands of thousands of citizens who continue gathering in Tirana.
