Two employees lost their lives within just a few hours of each other while carrying out their duties inside Albania's Jordan Misja Prison, an extraordinary incident that is expected to fuel renewed scrutiny over a penitentiary system that has repeatedly found itself at the center of public controversy.
In recent years, Albanian prisons have generated headlines over allegations of privileged treatment for inmates, luxury-equipped prison cells, security breaches, corruption scandals and irregularities behind bars. Now, attention is turning to another alarming issue: the safety and working conditions of prison staff after two officers suffered fatal medical emergencies during the same night inside one of the country's most important correctional institutions.
According to the General Directorate of Prisons, Commissioner Zog Muhametaj, an Information Specialist, collapsed shortly after 9:36 p.m. on June 29 while conducting the staff briefing before the shift change. Colleagues and medical personnel immediately provided first aid before transporting him by the prison ambulance to the Military Hospital, where doctors were unable to save his life despite continuous efforts. Only a few hours later, shortly after midnight on June 30, Chief Inspector Pëllumb Vrana, who served as the institution's Camera Technician, also suffered a sudden medical emergency while on duty inside the prison. He likewise received immediate assistance from colleagues and the institution's nurse before being rushed to the University Hospital Center "Mother Teresa" in Tirana, where he died around 1:00 a.m. The unprecedented loss of two employees during the same shift has inevitably raised questions about whether the circumstances surrounding the tragedy require further examination beyond the official statement.
Although prison authorities described both deaths as resulting from sudden health conditions and expressed condolences to the victims' families, the timing of the incidents is likely to intensify public concern over what is happening inside Albania's prison system. Muhametaj had served in the penitentiary administration since 2015 and had been assigned to Jordan Misja Prison since 2023, while Vrana was recognized for his role in maintaining the institution's surveillance and security infrastructure. The General Directorate of Prisons praised both men for their professionalism, dedication and commitment to duty, describing their service as an example for the institution. Nevertheless, the deaths come at a time when Albania's prison administration continues to face growing public scrutiny over management, transparency and internal conditions, making this latest tragedy another episode that is expected to generate demands for greater accountability and closer examination of the realities behind prison walls.
