The trunk is filled to capacity with roughly a dozen large, tightly wrapped rectangular packages containing marijuana, securely sealed in transparent plastic film and grey tape. The vehicle is parked on a light-colored concrete surface under a covered facility. The left rear door of the car is slightly ajar in the background, and the red taillights of the sedan border the cargo area on both sides, documenting the evidence seized by Greek authorities during the border interception.

Greek authorities have intercepted a significant drug shipment near the border area between Greece and Albania, during an operation carried out in the wider Igoumenitsa region.

According to police sources, officers stopped a vehicle suspected of transporting narcotics through the so-called “green border” crossing route. Inside the car, they discovered 102 packages containing a total of approximately 109.3 kg of marijuana.

The drugs were reportedly hidden in the rear seats and the trunk of the vehicle, indicating an attempt to carefully conceal the large shipment during transport.

Arrest of Turkish suspect

During the operation, Greek police arrested a 43-year-old Turkish national, who is believed to have been driving the vehicle. Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify possible accomplices and wider trafficking networks connected to the case.

Part of a wider trafficking pattern

This seizure adds to a growing number of drug interceptions in the region. Since September 2025, Greek law enforcement has reportedly confiscated more than 1.1 tons of narcotics, much of which is suspected to have been trafficked through border areas close to Albania.

The most frequent incidents have been recorded in Igoumenitsa, a key transport hub used for both land and sea routes. Additional cases have also been reported in Ioannina, Thessaloniki, and Kastoria, suggesting a broader regional trafficking corridor.

Ongoing investigations

Authorities continue to investigate whether the latest shipment is linked to organized networks operating across the border region. The case remains open as police work to trace the full chain behind the transport route and its coordination.
