Giant Snake Appears in City Center, Frightening Residents Near Busy Public Square

A surprising and alarming scene unfolded in the heart of Fier on Tuesday afternoon when a large snake was spotted moving through a sidewalk area near the city center, triggering fear and concern among local residents.

A daytime outdoor shot showing a large, harmless legless lizard (scheltopusik, known locally as a bullgar or tallallush) moving along a concrete curb next to a brick sidewalk in Fier, Albania. The reptile has a smooth, segmented, brownish-bronze body and a distinct lizard-like head. An inset close-up box in the upper right corner focuses on the creature's head peaking out from behind some green weeds, showing its lizard eyes and mouth structure. In the background, a concrete planter base, a green post, and a patch of dirt are visible next to the paved pedestrian walkway.
Although witnesses were alarmed, thinking it was a large snake near the city center, the footage confirms that the reptile is a legless turtle (mock turtle), a type of lizard completely harmless and non-poisonous to humans.
According to eyewitnesses, the reptile appeared close to the riverbank located just a short distance from Fier's central square, one of the busiest areas in the city. The unexpected sight immediately drew attention from passersby, many of whom stepped away from the area in fear as the snake moved nearby.

Residents who observed the animal said it appeared to be a non-aggressive species. Nevertheless, its presence in such a heavily frequented urban location caused understandable alarm, especially among families and parents whose children regularly spend time in the area during the afternoon hours.

The incident has reignited concerns about wildlife entering populated zones from nearby natural habitats. Citizens are now calling on local authorities and responsible institutions to take preventive measures and increase monitoring around the riverbank to reduce the risk of similar encounters in the future.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, witnesses described moments of tension as people quickly distanced themselves from the area until the reptile eventually left the zone.

The appearance of a large snake in one of Fier's busiest public spaces serves as a reminder of the challenges that can arise when urban areas and natural environments exist in close proximity. While experts note that many snake species found in Albania are not aggressive toward humans, unexpected encounters in crowded locations can still cause significant fear and disruption.

Authorities have not yet released further information regarding the species involved or whether additional monitoring measures will be implemented following the incident.
