Albanian Language Teachers from London Visit Piana degli Albanesi for the First Time
A delegation of eleven Albanian language teachers and Albanian community activists from the United Kingdom has paid its first official visit to Piana degli Albanesi, one of the most important centers of Arbëresh heritage and culture in Italy.
The initiative was organized by the association “Ardhmëria” with the aim of fostering cultural dialogue, preserving the Albanian language, and strengthening ties between the Albanian diaspora and the historic Arbëresh communities that have safeguarded their heritage for centuries. The delegation was welcomed at the Municipal Hall of Piana degli Albanesi by Mayor Rosario Petta, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Morena Picone and municipal officials Pino Garbone and Nino Cusenza.
A Meeting Celebrating Arbëresh Identity
The meeting took place in the mayor’s office, a space rich in symbols of Arbëresh history and identity. Historical photographs, archival documents, cultural artifacts, and educational materials offered visitors a unique insight into the collective memory and traditions of the local community.
For the participants, the visit represented an important opportunity to connect with a community that shares the same linguistic and cultural roots while preserving its distinct identity within Italy.
Focus on the Albanian Language and Cultural Cooperation
During the visit, the delegation watched a short documentary highlighting the history of Piana degli Albanesi and its cultural heritage. This was followed by a roundtable discussion focused on cultural cooperation, language preservation, and future collaboration between Albanian organizations abroad and Arbëresh institutions.
Participants emphasized the importance of education and cultural initiatives in ensuring that the Albanian language continues to be passed on to younger generations, both within diaspora communities and among the Arbëresh population.
Building Bridges Between the Diaspora and Historic Communities
The visit was widely viewed as a meaningful step toward strengthening relations between Albanians living abroad and the Arbëresh communities that have preserved Albanian traditions, language, and customs for more than five centuries.
The meeting highlighted the value of international cooperation in protecting a shared cultural heritage and reaffirmed the enduring historical bonds that unite Albanian communities across Europe.
