An Albanian shop owner successfully repelled two armed robbers at his minimarket in Thessaloniki early Sunday morning using a wooden club and a defiant verbal response.
The incident occurred at approximately 05:15 AM in the Vardar area of Thessaloniki. According to surveillance footage published by the Greek news outlet voria.gr, two young individuals with their faces concealed by hoodies entered the store brandishing knives. The perpetrators targeted the owner, demanding cash under the threat of violence.
The situation took a dramatic turn when the owner, of Albanian origin, refused to comply. Instead of yielding to the armed suspects, he grabbed a wooden club kept behind the counter for protection. Confronting the attackers head-on and shouting in Albanian, he chased the suspects out of the premises.
Local authorities were alerted following the failed heist. Preliminary reports suggest that the suspects fled the scene on foot, empty-handed, after being overwhelmed by the owner's swift and fearless reaction. The Thessaloniki police are currently reviewing the CCTV footage to identify the individuals involved in the attempted robbery.
This event highlights a growing concern regarding early-morning security for small businesses in the Vardar district. While local police often advise against direct confrontation with armed individuals, the owner's bravery has sparked significant discussion across Greek and Albanian social media platforms regarding self-defense and the safety of the migrant business community in Greece.
