In a statement shared on social media, Whitaker emphasized US expectations for Albania to further enhance military mobility capabilities. He also pointed to the importance of meeting defense spending targets, referencing the goal of allocating 5% of GDP to defense as outlined by former US President Donald Trump.
The timing of the visit comes amid discussions about the strategic role of the Kuçova base, including whether it could be used by the United States for potential operations. Prime Minister Rama indicated Albania would support international efforts aligned with weakening hostile regimes, while noting that any operational role would depend on US support, particularly in air defense.
Albanian officials reiterated the country’s strong strategic partnership with the United States and its commitment to NATO obligations. Minister Nufi stressed that decisions regarding the use of the Kuçova base remain tied to Albania’s role within the alliance framework.
During the meetings, both sides highlighted the importance of deepening diplomatic and military ties, as well as Albania’s growing contributions to cybersecurity, peacekeeping missions, and international stabilization efforts. The discussions also touched on preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit planned to take place in Tirana.
