Albania successfully produced 7.5 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity in 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy independence and regional influence.

According to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), the Albanian energy sector saw a robust performance last year, driven primarily by favorable hydrological conditions and increased investment in renewable sources. This surge in production allowed the country to not only meet domestic demand but also position itself as a key energy exporter in the Balkans.

Despite the record-breaking output, challenges remain regarding infrastructure efficiency. The report highlights that grid losses continue to impact the total yield. While technical and non-technical losses have seen a gradual decline compared to previous years due to ongoing modernization of the distribution network, they still represent a critical area for improvement for Albania to maximize its green energy potential.

The 2025 figures underscore the strategic importance of the Drin River cascade and the growing contribution of solar power plants. As Kosovo and other neighboring nations seek to stabilize their power supplies, Albania’s ability to generate a surplus provides a vital safety net for the regional energy market. Government officials have signaled that further investments in battery storage and grid stability are the next steps to minimizing waste.
