Incident During the Match

The disciplinary action came after the match played on March 5, 2026, which Basel won 1–0. Abrashi entered the game as a substitute in the 61st minute, but the situation escalated in stoppage time when he was involved in a physical confrontation with Basel midfielder Koba Koindredi.

According to reports, Koindredi pushed Abrashi from behind inside the penalty area during the build-up to a play. Abrashi then turned around and struck his opponent, which led the referee to show him a red card for violent conduct.

Decision by the Swiss Football League

Following the incident, the Swiss Football League reviewed the case and decided to impose a three-game suspension on the Grasshoppers captain. The league stated that although there had been a provocation, the act was still considered violent conduct and warranted disciplinary punishment.

Impact on Grasshoppers

Abrashi’s suspension is a significant setback for Grasshoppers, as he is one of the team’s most experienced players and a key leader in midfield. The Zurich club will have to play their next three league matches without their captain as they continue their campaign in the Swiss Super League.

A Veteran of Albanian Football

Born in Switzerland in 1990, Abrashi has had a long professional career, playing for clubs such as SC Freiburg before returning to Grasshoppers. He was also a long-time member of the Albania national football team, representing Albania in several international competitions before retiring from international football in 2025.

Despite the suspension, Abrashi remains an important figure for his club, and he is expected to return after serving the three-match ban.
