Around 800 Vacant Places in Kosovo Prisons, Correctional Service Confirms

According to an official statement, a total of 1,758 inmates are currently being held across Kosovo’s correctional facilities, while overall capacity allows for approximately 800 additional prisoners.
The Correctional Service said that claims circulating in some media outlets regarding overcrowding and insufficient capacity are inaccurate.

“Following information circulating in several media outlets about a lack of capacity in correctional institutions, we inform the public that there are currently a total of 1,758 prisoners being held in the institutions of the Kosovo Correctional Service,” the statement reads.

It further emphasizes that the Service has “around 800 vacant beds,” adding that correctional institutions have sufficient space to accommodate new cases.

The announcement, the statement notes, was issued to ensure accurate public information and to prevent misinformation.

Additionally, the Kosovo Correctional Service and the Kosovo Police have a memorandum of understanding for institutional cooperation. Under this agreement, depending on circumstances, the facilities of either institution may be used temporarily by the other.
