Traditional Costumes Regain Popularity in Gjirokastër

Traditional Albanian costumes are making a strong comeback, becoming increasingly popular not only among locals for family celebrations and cultural events, but also among tourists eager to experience a unique part of the country’s heritage.

“In a sign of respect, admiration, or love for the beauty and history behind the costume, people order individual pieces or even the full attire,” explains artisan Eli Zhulati. “For Albanians, both locals and those living abroad, the interest is often tied to their parents or in memory of their ancestors. Many come with old photographs in hand, hoping to relive and preserve that emotion.”

Artisans in Gjirokastër create a wide range of costumes, though most are inspired by the traditions of southern Albania, where demand remains strongest.

“Since I work on commission and I am from Gjirokastër, I mostly focus on the costumes of the southern region,” Zhulati says. “I can’t say that I produce those of the Highlands, Tirana, or Central Albania, because each area has its own unique features. Here, the costumes of the south are the most requested.”

Handmade with meticulous detail, the traditional garments of Gjirokastër are more than clothing. They are living histories, carefully embroidered pieces that embody the identity, customs, and soul of southern Albania.
