This philatelic innovation is dedicated to the Arbëresh community of Piana degli Albanesi, a community that, since the 15th century, has faithfully preserved the Albanian language and traditions, fostering a strong cultural bridge between Albania and Italy. The initiative reflects deep respect for a centuries-old history that has significantly enriched Italy’s cultural mosaic.

The vignette of the stamp features a detail of a traditional folkloric costume — a central element of Arbëresh identity. This attire, a powerful symbol of tradition and intergenerational continuity, comes from the collection of Francesca Saltaformaggio, a passionate collector of Arbëresh cultural heritage. The photograph for the stamp was taken by renowned photographer Alessandro Ferrantelli.

Through the issuance of this stamp, the Ministry aims to promote the preservation of these traditions while strengthening the connection between citizens and Italy’s cultural legacy.

The Arbëresh community of Piana degli Albanesi remains a remarkable example of resilience, identity, and cultural strength among ethnic minorities. This postage stamp serves as both a tribute to this extraordinary heritage and a reminder that safeguarding diversity and cultural memory is a shared responsibility — one that must be nurtured today and carried forward for future generations.
