Davide Pecorelli Appeals to Italian Senator Over Harsh Detention in Albania

Italian businessman Davide Pecorelli, who made headlines in 2021 after faking his own death in Albania, has sent a heartfelt letter to Italian senator Walter Verini, secretary of the Justice Committee in the Senate and a key figure of the Democratic Party.

In the letter, Pecorelli denounces what he calls unjust detention in Albania’s notorious Prison 313, which he describes as “the harshest and most infamous in the country”. He claims to share a cramped cell with seven other inmates, living in conditions he says are dire and unsanitary.

“I have contracted hepatitis C and lost 12 kilograms in four months,” Pecorelli writes, describing severe health deterioration and what he calls inhumane treatment.

The Italian convict urges Senator Verini to intervene and shed light on his legal case, stressing the importance of the upcoming final appeal hearing scheduled for September 18, 2025, at 18:00 in the Tirana Court of Appeal.

“I ask that my last wish be heard: to uncover the whole truth of this case by any means available,” he pleads in his appeal.

Background on the Pecorelli Case

Pecorelli became widely known in both Italy and Albania in 2021, when he was reported missing in northern Albania. Initial reports suggested he had died, but it was later discovered that he had staged his own death in a case that sparked multiple investigations and significant public debate.

Currently serving his sentence in Albania, Pecorelli continues to contest his detention and insists that his fundamental rights are being violated. His letter raises questions not only about the fairness of his trial but also about the state of prison conditions in Albania, a topic that has drawn international criticism for years.

The outcome of the September 18 hearing could be decisive for Pecorelli’s future — and may also test Albania’s justice system at a time when its credibility and alignment with European Union standards are under scrutiny.
