Albania’s EU Membership Bid: Backed by Sweden and Spain, Opposed by Germany and France

A new Eurobarometer survey published in September 2025 shows that support for the enlargement of the European Union remains high across the bloc, particularly among young people aged 15 to 39.

According to the findings, 56% of EU citizens favor further enlargement, with a majority also believing that their own country would benefit from the process. The most commonly cited advantages include a stronger EU influence on the global stage (37%), a larger market for EU businesses (37%), more job opportunities (31%), and greater solidarity among member states (30%).

Albania’s Path to the EU: Who Supports and Who Opposes?

When it comes specifically to Albania’s potential accession, the survey reveals a divided picture across Europe.

  • Northern and Southwestern Europe are the strongest supporters.

    • Sweden tops the list, with 74% of citizens in favor of Albania joining the EU.

    • It is followed by Denmark (60%), the Netherlands (59%), Croatia (58%), Malta (57%), and Spain (55%).

  • Central and Western European states, however, remain skeptical.

    • In the Czech Republic, only 29% support Albania’s accession, while 62% oppose it.

    • In Germany, 35% are in favor and 56% against.

    • In France, support stands at 36%, with 48% opposed.

    • Greece (39% pro, 58% against) and Belgium (40% pro, 56% against) also reflect significant resistance.

  • Other countries show divided opinions.

    • Italy is almost evenly split (48% in favor, 47% opposed).

    • Poland leans slightly supportive (47% pro, 43% against).

    • Lithuania also shows mixed views (45% pro, 39% against).

Albania’s Own Perspective

Within Albania itself, enthusiasm for joining the EU remains overwhelming. According to the same survey, 92% of Albanians support accession, while 82% hold a positive view of the European Union overall.

A Divided Union, a United Aspiration

The survey underscores both the continued popularity of EU enlargement among citizens, especially the younger generation, and the regional divisions over Albania’s membership bid. While northern and southern European countries appear more open to Albania’s accession, skepticism in major EU states such as Germany and France suggests that Tirana still faces an uphill battle on its road toward full membership.
