Albania Sees Surge in Gastroenteritis Cases: 200 Children Daily at Pediatric Emergency in Tirana

Dr. Albert Lama, head of the Pediatric Emergency Department, explained that the majority of cases are related to viral gastroenteritis.

“Most children come in with vomiting, diarrhea, or both—sometimes accompanied by fever, sometimes without,” said Dr. Lama. “These are the most common cases we are seeing right now.”

Children Between Ages 1–4 Most Affected

While the virus is spreading widely among the population, young children between the ages of 1 and 4 are the most vulnerable. Doctors are urging parents to take preventive measures and avoid sending sick children to nurseries, kindergartens, or schools.

“The incubation period varies, but on average it lasts about one week during which the illness remains contagious,” Dr. Lama noted. “That means children should not return to collective environments, even if their condition appears to be improving.”

Nationwide Increase in Gastroenteritis Cases

In recent days, health authorities have observed a sharp rise in gastroenteritis cases across the country. Official data show that in just one week, approximately 8,000 people sought medical help due to viral infections.

Doctors continue to advise parents to pay close attention to symptoms, ensure proper hydration, and seek medical assistance if their child’s condition worsens.
