In recent years, Albania has become an increasingly attractive destination for foreigners seeking to live and work. Official figures show that by the end of last year, the number of foreign nationals residing in the country reached 22,000, marking a significant rise compared to 13,600 in 2020.

Foreign Residents in Albania Reach Record 22,000 – Growth Driven by Jobs and Family Reunification

The steady growth reflects a progressive increase in the number of foreigners granted residence permits. According to statistics, the foreign resident population is predominantly male (62%) compared to females (38%). The most represented age group is 30–39 years old, underlining that employment is the key factor drawing many of these individuals to Albania.

When it comes to geographical origin, Europe accounts for the majority with around 66% (14,000 individuals), followed by Asia with 20%. Among the countries with the highest number of residents are Kosovo, Italy, and Turkey, whose citizens make up the largest share of foreign nationals with residence permits in Albania.

Employment is the main driver behind this trend, representing 54% of issued permits, followed by family reunification at 24%.

Meanwhile, data published by State Institute of Statistics known locally with the acronym "INSTAT" also highlighted challenges related to irregular migration. In 2024 alone, 1,540 foreigners were identified as being in Albania without proper documentation or permits.

The growing presence of foreign nationals not only diversifies Albania’s social fabric but also points to the country’s increasing role as a place of economic opportunity and cultural exchange in the region.
