The New York Police Department (NYPD) has awarded Officer Vlora Gjeka, an Albanian-American with roots in Gjakova, the prestigious “Police Combat Cross”, the department’s second-highest honor for bravery. The medal was presented in recognition of her extraordinary courage during a life-threatening incident while she was off duty.
Officer Gjeka demonstrated remarkable heroism when she intervened, alongside her colleague Officer Michael Saline, in an armed confrontation. Their swift and decisive actions neutralized a serious threat, safeguarding the lives of innocent bystanders. The NYPD praised their intervention as a shining example of the core values of law enforcement: courage, integrity, and dedication.
Officer Saline, of Italian-Calabrian heritage, expressed pride in his connection to the Albanian community, highlighting the cultural unity and shared commitment that brings diverse communities together in service and sacrifice.
The Albanian American Law Enforcement Association (AALEA) extended its heartfelt congratulations to Officer Gjeka, describing the honor as a historic moment for Albanians in the U.S. The organization encouraged Albanian-Americans and supporters of public service to take pride in her achievement, which exemplifies the positive impact of the Albanian diaspora in the fabric of American society.
Officer Gjeka’s recognition stands not only as a personal milestone but also as a symbol of the growing presence and contribution of Albanian-Americans in public service across the United States.
