 The number of registered students in schools experienced a rapid decline in the 2022-2023 academic year, reflecting the decrease in population due to declining birth rates and high emigration, Monitor reports.

INSTAT reported today that in the 2022-2023 academic year, 554,222 students were registered in official education, representing a decrease of 4.1% compared to the 2021-2022 academic year.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, the number of students enrolled in the 9-year education reached 267,267 students in public educational institutions, indicating a yearly decrease of 4%.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, the majority of registered students in secondary education are from gymnasiums and social-cultural secondary education, accounting for 82.5%.

This proportion has remained nearly the same over the past three years. The majority of registered students in secondary education attend public educational institutions (85.7%).

In the 2022-2023 academic year, the number of teachers in the 9-year education is 24,388, of which 77.4% are women.

The student-to-teacher ratio in public primary education is 15.5, while in private primary education, it is 14.4. In the upper cycle of the 9-year education, the student-to-teacher ratio in public schools is 8.2, and in private schools, it is 7.8. The number of teachers in secondary education is 8,357, of which 69.8% are women.

The student-to-teacher ratio in secondary education is 11.9 in public schools and 9.3 in private schools.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, the number of students continuing their studies in all higher education programs reached 121,352, marking a decrease of 2.0% compared to 2021-2022.

Students attending public higher education constitute 74.9% of the total number of students.

In all higher education programs, in the 2022-2023 academic year, 71,248 female students are enrolled, accounting for 58.7% of the total number of students in higher education.

In bachelor's programs, during the same period, 71,192 students participated in higher education, showing a decrease of 2.3% compared to 2021-2022.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, similar to the previous academic year, students seem to prefer the field of study "Business, Administration, and Law," which accounts for one-fourth of the total number of students. The least preferred field is "Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing, and Veterinary," where only 2.6% of the total number of students are registered.

Analyzing each field of study, compared to the previous academic year, the largest decrease in the number of students pursuing higher education is observed in the fields of "Arts and Humanities" with 16.9% and "Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Statistics" with 10.9%.

On the other hand, the fields of "Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing, and Veterinary" and "Information and Communication Technology" show the highest increase in the number of students, with 12.2% and 9.9%.
