The Bank of Albania has increased the base interest rate for the lek for the third time this year.

The supervisory council decided to increase the rate of the national currency by two steps, from 0.5%, bringing its interest to 1.75%, the highest level of the last decade.

The governor of the central bank, Gent Sejko, said that the changes in the monetary policy are aimed at curbing the increase in prices.

The Bank of Albania expects a higher increase in inflation during the coming months, but nevertheless, the projections for economic growth are for a positive territory, although slower than the first part of the year.

Governor Gent Sejko warned that the monetary policy will continue to tighten by increasing the interest rate.

Simultaneously with the lek interest, the Bank of Albania increased the overnight deposit and loan interest by 0.5%.

The purpose of increasing the interest rate of the lek is to increase the cost of money in order to curb the increase in consumption and the further increase in prices. This policy will increase the interest on loans and new deposits.
