Kosovo's President Hashim Thaçi says he will resign if the indictment for crimes against humanity is confirmed

The President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, said on Monday that if the indictment of the Specialized Prosecutor against him is confirmed, then he will immediately resign from his position.

"If I could go back to the dark years of the former Serbian leader, Slobodan Milosevic, I would do the same thing, responding to the enemy's bullet with a thirst for freedom and not harming any Serb, Roma or Albanian citizen", said Thaçi.

"There has not been and will not be a single piece of evidence against Hashim Thaçi for violating any law," he said.

Thaci said the war crimes charges against him were "false".

He made the comments after the Special Prosecutor's Office announced last Wednesday that on April 24 he sent to the Specialized Chambers of Kosovo, based in The Hague, an indictment with ten points for review, in it which Thaçi, the chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Kadri Veseli, and others are accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Suspected crimes include: manslaughter, forced disappearances, persecution and torture.

"The indictment alleges that Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli and other suspects whose names have not been made public are criminally responsible for nearly 100 illegal killings," the Special Prosecutor's Office said in a press release issued on June 24.

The case has now been referred to the pre-trial judge, who will confirm or dismiss the indictment.
