On International Workers' Day, the Albanian President Ilir Meta emphasized that May 1 of this year (2020) finds Albania with the lowest salary level in the region and in Europe according to international financial institutions.

The head of the state posted on his Facebook profile the difficult situations of recent days in our country have further aggravated the economic situation in which the financial institutions are.

In his reaction, he stressed that is worrying the mass exodus of many workers in the current conditions of poverty, deterioration of social services, and political tensions, especially skilled workers. According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic and its long-term effects on the country's economy are expected to further exacerbate these negative phenomena.

Even May 1 of this year, International Workers' Day, finds Albania with the lowest wage level in the region and in Europe according to international financial institutions.

The dire economic situation worsened by the difficult situation we are going through does not give hope that something will change for the better in the near future.

Employees in the private sector still continue to express great dissatisfaction with the lack of a regular employment contract, non-compliance with working conditions and their rights, low wages and non-payment of social contributions.

There is also a profound loss of confidence in fair competition and meritocracy-based employment in public administration and public institutions...the COVID-19 pandemic and its long-term effects on the country's economy are expected to exacerbate these negative phenomena.

In the current situation, let's pay special attention and add that the workers in the most affected sectors, not only listen to them, but also really benefit from the promised economic packages.

Better cooperation is needed in this situation to support entrepreneurs and small businesses, through a concrete and tangible strategy, to reopen the economy.

The situation requires urgent reflection and concrete measures so that May 1 is no longer marked as an ordinary holiday, but as a holiday for the achievements of workers.

A thank you on this day for the doctors and nurses of all those who are in the front line against COVID-19, in protecting the health of every citizen.
