Italy has announced the lowest daily death toll since March 23

Italy reported the lowest daily death toll on Saturday as a result of COVID-19 after about two weeks and said the number of patients in intensive care had dropped for the first time. Officials urged the population not to ignore the strict isolation measures, which they said had begun to yield results.

Authorities announced on Saturday 681 deaths, bringing the total to over 15,000. This is considered the lowest daily death toll since March 23.

The total number of confirmed cases increased to over 124 thousand.

The head of the Civil Defense Authority, Angelo Borelli, considered this as important news for the country because, as he said, it gives hospitals the opportunity to breathe. Italian officials have said the steady increase in the number of cases suggests that the pandemic has reached its highest point and that the figures are likely to fall if strict isolation measures are observed.
