Serbian footballer agrees to play for Kosovo U19 national team, Serbia fires his parents

The Executive Committee of the Football Federation of Kosovo (FFK), said through a press release that was "shocked by the news learned by the leaders of the Flamurtari Football Club that the parents of the young footballer of the club, Ilija Ivic, have been fired."

The committee alleges that the mother of the footballer Ivic, who worked as a civil servant in the municipality of Gracanica, and his father - an education worker, were fired because their son admitted to playing for the Kosovo U19 national team.

“The FFK EC strongly condemns this heinous act undertaken by leaders of institutions operating within the system of the Republic of Kosovo, as well as those of the parallel Serbian system, which aim to instill fear in our Serbian citizens, who see Kosovo as their country and who want to contribute to its development and the development of the football as well,” reads the press release.

Ilija Ivic is the first player from the Serbian community to accept playing for Kosovo teams. In an interview with the Kosovo media, he said he had been part of the "Flamurtari" team for three years and was very well received.

Commenting on the commitment of the Serbian footballer to the Kosovo club, the Football Federation of Kosovo says that "never evaluates the footballers on the basis of nationality, race, ethnicity or religion, but will always be committed to inviting its national football chains".

The FFK urges both domestic and international institutions, but also the European Football Federation and the World Federation, to respond strongly to preventing such discriminatory phenomena.
