 Flowers are the symbol of Valentine's Day. In recent years the Albanians, mostly men, have increasingly been choosing flower bouquets as gifts for their women or girlfriends.

Almost three times more flowers are now imported to Albania than in 2013. Data from Customs showed that the flowers totaled nearly 1 billion ALL during 2019, 4% more than the previous year.

However, the record for imported flowers was recorded in 2017, with a value of ALL 1.07 billion.

Market invited by Dutch flowers

The Netherlands is the main market supplying flowers to the Albanian flower market. According to the Albanian State Institute of Statistics (ASIS), over ALL 331 million of flowers and plants were imported from the Netherlands in 2019, accounting for about one-third of the country's imports.



Italy ranks second in terms of imported quantity, a narrow margin with the Netherlands. According to ASIS data, from Italy have been imported ALL 314 million worth of flowers or 31% of total imports.

Greece is the third country of origin with ALL 105 million.

Imports of flowers from Latin America raised

The year 2019 has marked a high growth of flowers imported from Colombia. In the year that followed, Albanian traders brought from the remote Latin country flowers worth at ALL 38 million, three times more than a year earlier.

In 2018, imports of flowers and plants from Colombia reached to ALL 13 million.

Ecuador, also another Latin American country, was one of the main countries of origin of flowers and plants imported in Albania - ALL 25 million, imports of which have increased significantly since 2016, in which only ALL 8 million worth of flowers and plants has been imported.
