European Commission for the earthquake: € 15 million for Albania

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has promised 15m euros in aid to Albania hit by the most powerful earthquake in decades.

The solidarity with our country in this difficult moment continues and is already been materializing with concrete financial assistance, in addition to what previously arrived in the form of specialized search and rescue teams now there are experts in the field verifying the damages.

“The EU is in full solidarity with Albania with actions, not just words. We are already backing on the ground, committed to offering even more. So far, the Commission has helped mobilize three search teams with a staff of more than 200 persons from Italy, Greece, and Romania. Commissioner Lenarcic will travel to Albania where he will look closely at the situation and create a more complete picture of the condition of the affected buildings as well as an assessment of the type of assistance needed for the reconstruction.

The first step in the meantime is to immediately allocate 15m euros in support of the Albanian people,” she said.

The European Union, as the New York Times wrote two days ago, is at the forefront of Albania's recovery efforts after the devastating earthquake.

The European Union and the United Nations are coordinating international efforts to help the country recover from this natural disaster, the article said, highlighting how a European bloc team is leading the assessment and delivery of aid. Six member states have deployed 50 structural engineers, with others expected to arrive to assess the damage along with local counterparts.

The United States Agency for International Development has also sent structural engineers from the Fairfax and Los Angeles County fire departments to assist in the process.
