After two years, Wikipedia reopens in Turkey

After two and a half years of blocking, Wikipedia will no longer be censored in Turkey. This morning, the Information Technology Control Authority (BTK) made the decision after the Constitutional Court in Ankara had ruled that blocking the website in question violated freedom of speech.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales welcomed the decision by writing "Welcome back, Turkey," in a Twitter post, accompanied by a photo during a trip to Turkey.

The ban on Wikipedia in all languages was imposed by the Government in April 2017, as some of its articles stated that Turkish executive officials were involved in the fuel trade with Islamic State militants. After Wikipedia refused to delete the articles, Ankara said it was part of a campaign against Turkey and took administrative action.
