Rama meets Mitsotakis in New York; the European integration of Albania on the table

 Among the first meetings held by the new Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, there was one with his Albanian counterpart Edi Rama.

Initially the two prime ministers discussed the earthquake that struck Albania on Saturday, September 21, then moved on to bilateral relations between the two countries and to the European integration of the Land of Eagles on the eve of the October European Council summit which will decide on the opening of official accession negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia.

In this sense, Mitsotakis reiterated to Rama the conditions established by the European Union and that Athens wants them to be met, including those concerning the rights of the Greek minority in Albania.

In particular, the Greek prime minister underlined the issues of the right of self-determination and the right of property of the Greek minority as a fundamental condition for the Greek ok at the opening of official negotiations, reaffirming at the same time that Athens is in constant favor of the integration of Tirana in the European Union.

According to official Greek government sources, Rama expressed his willingness to cooperate with Greece on issues of particular interest to Athens. The two premieres will resume the talks on bilateral issues at the Euro-Arab summit scheduled at Athens on 29-30 October 2019.
