The Greek government has officially asked Berlin to open negotiations on the possibility of compensation for crimes committed by the German army during the First and Second World War, especially during the Nazi occupation.

The German Foreign Ministry confirmed today that has received a request from Athens on this issue, without giving much details.

According to a statement by the Greek Foreign Ministry, Greece's ambassador to Berlin presented to the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs a text in which the Greek government asks the German side to launch negotiations to resolve the pending case of war reparations that Greece claims.

In April, the Greek parliament voted a resolution calling on the Athens government to act in this direction.

"This diplomatic move, which comes just over a month before the early parliamentary elections in Greece, is being carried out in accordance with the decision taken by the majority of deputies of the Greek parliament," reads the press release of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
