Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos asks money from Greeks to buy warships

 Greece will get help from the people to buy warships. Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos stated that, to buy new combat ships for the Greek fleet, they will raise money from the people, opening an aid account.

On the day of St. Nicholas, who is believed to be the patron of sailors, Kammmenos attended and delivered a speech at the ceremony organised at the Navy Academy in Piraeus. Stressing that Greece and the the Mediterranean countries will become a center for energy production, Kammenos said: "This forces us to have a powerful fleet to protect our sovereign rights and to strengthen the security of the region." 

He said that this objective should be reached next year. "But now we need the great donors of our country. To buy frigate and the admiral ship, to reinforce our fleet, I call on to Greek people and shipbuilders to save on their needs to support us in this national effort with the bank account that will be opened on January 1,  2019 "Kammenos said. 

He stated that the first aid would be paid into the account in question from his salary. Greece, which tries to leave behind the economic crisis, also makes a military spending of over $ 5 billion a year. With this value, which corresponds to 2.5% of national income, Greece is one of the countries that meets NATO criteria in terms of military spending.
