EU Lawmakers Warn Edi Rama’s Government: Rule of Law Is Key to Albania’s EU Accession

European Parliament representatives Marco Tarquinio, Chair of the Delegation for Relations with Albania, and Andreas Schieder, the Parliament’s standing rapporteur on Albania, have expressed deep concern over the escalation of protests in Tirana.

In a joint statement, the two MEPs condemned violence, attacks on public institutions, and the destruction of public and private property, urging protesters to exercise restraint.

“We strongly condemn the violent escalation of these protests, the attacks on public institutions, and the destruction of public and private property,” they stated, calling on demonstrators to refrain from violence.

The European Parliament representatives also called for investigations into reports of excessive police force, stressing the importance of accountability and respect for fundamental rights.

They reiterated that respect for the rule of law remains a key criterion and an essential condition for Albania’s progress toward European Union membership.

Their statement underscores the need for both protesters and state authorities to respect democratic principles, as Albania continues its path toward EU accession.
