A brutal altercation on the Southern Albanian Riviera has led to the tragic death of Portuguese tourist Luis Miguel Varela Mendez. State Police investigations have uncovered crucial details regarding the timeline of the attack and identified the key individuals involved in the homicide in Ksamil.
Breakdown of the Incident and Key Suspects
The physical violent dispute broke out at approximately 05:15 AM on August 18 within the premises of the "Principote" venue before spilling over onto the adjacent "Paradise" beach. Prior to the fatal stabbing, waiters from "Principote" were reportedly involved in the escalating fight.
- Sokrat Lipa (alias Vata): The 20-year-old from Has is suspected of stabbing Mendez multiple times. Police apprehended Vata approximately five hours after the crime in Levan, Fier, where he was caught hiding inside the trunk of a vehicle alongside two Turkish nationals.
- David Gjana (alias Heurtevent): The 29-year-old native of Kukës has been named as the second primary suspect. Facing charges of "Intentional Homicide Committed in Collaboration," Gjana allegedly physically assaulted the victim with his fists while Vata wielded the knife. Authorities noted that Gjana shares a close family relation with the venue's owner.
- Bekim Bulica: The owner of the "Principote" establishment remains at large and is currently wanted by law enforcement in connection with the crime.
Police Inaction and Rising Coastal Violence
The investigation has also drawn attention to institutional failure following the arrest of Miosid Matushaj, an active officer from the Gjirokastër Police Department. Matushaj was taken into custody under charges of failing to intervene during the fatal assault and failing to report the crime to relevant authorities afterward.
This fatal attack comes shortly after another severe incident in nearby Sarandë, where Crimes Chief Mateo Bakalli was assaulted by bouncers at the "Orange" club after attempting to defend a foreign tourist under attack. Together, these events highlight growing concerns regarding public safety and the enforcement of order across nightlife venues on the southern coast.
